Write and read a poem a day over Spring Break.
Stay home safe and enjoy the break! We are back Monday, April 13th!

Hey all! Three weeks of on-line learning! Way to go. Thanks for reading, writing essays, turning in projects and showing up during this crazy time. Continuing to teach and learn with all of you makes this a little easier. Our Zoom is at 1:00 today: https://lausd.zoom.us/j/169951141

For our check-in today, tell me your favorite flavor of ice cream. Mine: coffee...

Ok, our poem today is by Ada Limón.

Read through the poem 2-3 times (preferably out loud). What feeling do you get from the poem? What is it about? What do you notice happening in this poem? Annotate and make sense of this poem.

Here are my annotations:

And now our prompts for the day!

Inspired by Ada Limón, write a poem about a memory of a moment that took place before other changes took place.

From Winter Tangerine:  "Rewrite your favorite childhood fable in a world of your making."

From Writer's Digest: "write a new world poem. There are new worlds and there are new worlds. You could write a poem about discovery of an actual planet. Or maybe your new world is actually a state of mind—or a series of books! In a way, I consider each new challenge a bit of a new world. Let’s explore this one together.

Remember: These prompts are just springboards; you have the freedom to jump in any direction you want. In other words, it’s more important to write a new poem than to stick to the prompt."

Have a wonderful spring break. Make sure you actually take a break. But also, consider reading and writing a poem a day. Regular classes need to read (and record) and write 20 poems in April and EAP classes need to read (and record) and write 30 poems in April so plan accordingly.

I will continue to post poems and prompts over the break, but I won't be hosting any Zoom classes. Have a safe break and I'll see you on Monday, April 13th. Take care.
