They cut their hair as a disguise. While they stay at the church Ponyboy recites a poem he remembered from Johnny. "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, "Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief. So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay." They stay at the church for five days until Dally comes to pick them up. Dally takes Ponyboy and Johnny to get a proper meal before they head back.
